If you’re feeling down, or stressed, or disconnected from your partner, I want to share with you a simple way that you can shift into a more positive and peaceful space in an instant.
You can do that simply by leaning into GRATITUDE.
And since this week it’s the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, there’s no better time to be intentional about sinking into giving thanks and going to gratitude.
In our house, my wife and I have a long tradition of inviting everyone present for Thanksgiving dinner to share something they are thankful for before we dig in to the delicious feast.
I got to thinking that we could all really benefit by sharing gratitudes every single day. Not just on Thanksgiving.
So I’m challenging myself (and you) to create a daily gratitude tradition.
Why bother with noticing and sharing gratitudes?
Because a gratitude practice helps shift us out of our brain’s negativity bias. The human brain is wired for survival. That means we have a hardwired tendency to scan for, see, focus on, and remember negative or threatening events. Much more than positive ones.
To counter that negativity bias, it helps if we amplify and savor positive moments.
So, intentionally going to gratitude is a great way to do that.
As far as our primary relationship, expressing gratitude helps us maintain a closer and deeper connection with our partner.
In less than 60 seconds you can pivot into connection by letting your partner know something she’s said or done that you’re grateful for. Weaving gratitude into your relationship fabric every single day will strengthen your bond.
Going to gratitude is one of many ways that I teach lesbian couples to quickly pivot back into connection in my online group coaching course just for lesbian couples.
